Obtain an acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. DLIs are schools approved by the provincial or territorial government to host international students.
2.Prepare Documents
Proof of Acceptance: The acceptance letter from your DLI.
Proof of Identity: Passport and two recent passport-sized photos.
Proof of Financial Support: Evidence that you can support yourself financially during your studies, including tuition, living expenses, and return transportation costs.
Examples: bank statements, scholarship letters, or a letter from a sponsor.
Letter of Explanation: Explain why you want to study in Canada and understand your responsibilities as a student.
Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ): If studying in Quebec, you’ll need a CAQ from the Government of Quebec.
Custodian Declaration: For students under 18 (19 in some provinces), a custodian in Canada may be required.
Medical Exam: You may need a medical exam if you’re from certain countries or will be in Canada for over six months.
3.Complete the Online Application
Create an account on the Government of Canada’s immigration portal.
Submit the required forms and upload your documents. The key forms include the Application for Study Permit Made Outside of Canada (IMM 1294), among others depending on your circumstances.
4.Biometrics
After submitting the application, you may be asked to give biometrics (fingerprints and photos).
You’ll receive a biometric instruction letter to schedule an appointment at a Visa Application Center (VAC) near you.
5.Processing Time
Processing times vary by country. You can check current processing times on the IRCC website.
Student Direct Stream (SDS): If you’re from a select country, you may be eligible for the faster SDS, which requires specific financial proof and IELTS results.
6.Interview (if required)
You might be called for an interview. Be prepared to discuss your study plans, financial situation, and future goals.
7.Receive a Decision
If approved, you’ll receive a Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction, which you need when entering Canada.
Depending on your nationality, you may also receive a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) for entry.
8.Arrive in Canada
Upon arrival, present the POE Letter of Introduction, proof of finances, and other required documents to the immigration officer.
You will then receive your study permit.
Tips:
Apply Early: Start the process well before your program begins, as it can take weeks to months.
Double-Check Requirements: Requirements can vary by nationality and program, so consult the Canadian government’s immigration site for the most current information.
